Effect of purificatory measures through cow's urine and milk on strychnine and brucine content of Kupeelu (Strychnos nuxvomica Linn.) seeds.

چکیده
Strychnos nux vomica Linn.(Loganaceae) commonly known as Nux vomica (Kupeelu), is a poisonous plant and its seeds are used widely in Ayurvedic system of medicine since time immemorial. Ayurveda advocates that nux vomica seeds are to be administered in therapeutics only after going through certain purificatory measures (Shodhana). There are more than six media: cow's urine (Go mutra), cow's milk (Go dugdha), cow's ghee (Go ghrita), Kanji (thin gruel), castor oil (Eranda taila) and fresh ginger juice (Ardraka swarasa) etc., which have been reported in different classical texts of Ayurveda for proper processing of nux vomica seeds. In this study, an attempt has been made to purify the seeds by using three different methods as described in ancient treatise by using cow's urine and cow's milk as media alone and together. This study revealed that all the methods studied reduced the toxicity of strychnine and brucine contents in comparison to the raw seeds as determined by HPTLC. Out of these three methods maximum reduction in strychnine and brucine contents was found when the seeds were purified by keeping them in cow's urine for seven days followed by boiling in cow's milk for three hrs.

The seeds of Strychnos nuxvomica Linn. (Loganiaceae) were processed as prescribed in the Ayurvedic classics. The seeds were soaked in Kanji (3 days; Sample A); boiled in cow milk (3 h; Sample B); soaked in cow urine (7 days), boiled in cow milk (3 h) and roasted in cow ghee (till swollen; Sample C) and a sample roasted in cow ghee (till swollen; Sample D). The processed nux vomica were compared...
متن کاملDevelopment and validation of a TLC-densitometric method for the simultaneous quantitation of strychnine and brucine from Strychnos spp. and its formulations.
A simple, sensitive, and specific thin-layer chromatography densitometric method has been developed for the simultaneous quantitation of strychnine and brucine. These two marker compounds are quantitated in the seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica, Strychnos ignatii, and its formulations. The method involves densitometric evaluation of strychnine and brucine after resolving it by high-performance TLC ...

In an attempt to dissect the mechanism of Strychnos nuxvomica, a commonly used Chinese folk medicine in the therapy of liver cancer, the cytotoxic effects of four alkaloids in Strychnos nux-vomica, brucine, brucine N-oxide, strychnine, and isostrychnine, on human hepatoma cells (HepG2) were screened by 3-(4,5dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrasolium bromide (MTT) assay. Brucine, among the ...
متن کاملA rare case of strychnine poisoning by consumption of Strychnos nux- vomica leaves
Strychnine is one of the oldest poisons known to man. The source of this potent toxin is the Strychnos nux-vomica plant, which actually contains two distinct alkaloidsstrychnine and brucine. Although principally found in the seeds, these alkaloids can be isolated in varying concentrations from virtually all parts of the plant including the bark, leaves and roots[1]. Once consumed, strychnine pr...
متن کاملExtraction, Purification and Characterization of Indole Alkaloids from Strychnos wallichiana L. – an Endangered Medicinal Plant from India
Strychnos wallichiana (Loganiaceae) is a critically endangered medicinal plant, commonly used in several native medical practices. The majority of members of the Strychnos genus shares a similar chemical composition and contains common indole alkaloids. Purification of strychnine and brucine from a few species of Strychnos have already been reported; however, we have purified and quantified the...
